San Antonio Express News: University’s sneak attack falls flat

When it comes to making deals with University of the Incarnate Word President Lou Agnese, “what’s good for Lou is good for you.”

That’s a sardonic appraisal, of course, by some who have dealt with the university, which tried to sideswipe the San Antonio Zoo this week with a competing proposal for two acres of land owned by the San Antonio Independent School District near Brackenridge Park.

In an interview on Wednesday, Agnese angrily denied this.

“We would not be in conflict with the zoo,” he said. “It’s no competing proposal … We were just an interested party who were going to collaborate with our good friends at the zoo and our good friends at the district.”

Agnese even claimed not to know about the university’s proposal, a “memorandum of understanding” signed by Douglas Endsley, the university’s vice president for business and finance, and sent to the school district on Jan. 7.
