Celebrating 125 Years of Brackenridge Park
Presents
Christopher Cross in Concert
with the San Antonio Philharmonic
Conducted by Maestro Peter Bay at Sunken Garden Theater
Honoring Rhonda & Joe Calvert, legacy stewards of Brackenridge Park
Brackenridge Park’s 125th celebration culminates with a once-in-a-lifetime concert featuring San Antonio’s own Grammy-award-winning musician and songwriter, Christopher Cross who will be joined by the San Antonio Philharmonic conducted by Maestro Peter Bay.
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1980 self-titled debut album, winning five Grammy Awards, including—for the first time in Grammy history—the “Big Four” most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Cross has sold more than 10 million albums. His music has garnered five Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination and five Top 10 singles.
Joining Cross will be the San Antonio Philharmonic which envisions a San Antonio in which every resident has access to high-quality orchestral performances and educational opportunities that reflect the history and culture of our community. These musicians are “seeking ways to involve new audiences in the transformative power of music and re-invent the orchestra of the 21st century.”
The performance will be conducted by Maestro Peter Bay who has appeared with over eighty different orchestras. He became Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra in 1998, is the Primary Conductor for the Austin Ballet, Conductor of the Bravo! Big Sky Classical Festival Orchestra (MT) and Arizona Philharmonic and has conducted albums and soundtracks to include Christopher Cross’ Secret Ladder album.
Brackenridge Park Conservancy is hosting Concert in the Park on December 4th, the day George W. Brackenridge made the first bequest to establish Brackenridge Park 125 years ago. This will be a concert for all of San Antonio with a range of ticket prices. VIP spaces are available. All proceeds go towards raising funds to preserve and enhance the park’s natural, historic, educational, and recreational resources for current and future generations.
This memorable evening will be held at Sunken Garden Theater, an old quarry given new life as an event venue in 1930. Sunken Garden’s unique, natural setting has been home to the San Antonio Opera, symphony, jazz, dance, drama, and pop performances, and continues to be a beloved venue today.

Joe and Rhonda are long-time supporters of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy. Joe served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy from 2017-2020. Joe’s family has a long-time personal interest in Brackenridge Park. His great, great-grandfather was Ludwig Mahncke, a close friend of George Brackenridge, owner of San Antonio Water Works. Serving as the City Parks Commissioner, Mahncke encouraged Mr. Brackenridge to donate the land in 1899. Additionally, Joe’s grandmother, Carolyn Calvert, was a founding member of the San Antonio Symphony and his father James Calvert continued his civic interest as Symphony Chairman of the Board.
