Summer 2010:
The city of San Antonio provided funding to utilize space in Brackenridge Park for an animal control facility. The Brackenridge Park Conservancy opposed this move for multiple reasons:
- The Brackenridge Park master plan restricts the use of this part of the park to recreational purposes.
- The particular site identified for the facility was allocated to the zoo in the master plan.
- Part of the proposed site is owned by the San Antonio Independent School District. This reduces the size of available land.
- The already difficult traffic situation at the entrance to the zoo will be made even worse by placing an animal control facility here.
- The unfortunate historic practice of the public dumping unwanted animals in the park because of the presence of the former animal control facility will again become a problem.
Spring 2010:
Incarnate Word University submitted an unsolicited proposal to the city manager’s office, asking for a long-term lease of the area along Hildebrand including the building known as the “Donkey Barn.” The Conservancy was part of a coalition headed by Mayor Lila Cockrell, president and CEO of the San Antonio Parks Foundation, to oppose the lease. There was wide-spread opposition of the proposal from other park advocates as well. The city Parks and Recreation Department and the city manager’s office did not accept the proposal, and the land has been saved for legitimate park purposes.
